Saturday Sketch – Art Deco Mini dress

I recently (cam back Wednesday) took a trip to San Diego for work. There was one afternoon that I had off so I went down to the boardwalk. It was windy, and not exactly warm. I wanted to be inspired by my settings, get that cali-vibe in some of my sketches, but all I could think about is how I’d much rather be in Miami. I love Miami, it’s a favorite get away of mine. So as I was thinking about it, I started thinking about the Art Deco style, and this is the mini dress I came up with:

Saturday Sketch – My Process

I get asked all the time how I come up with ideas. Be it  for tutorials or just projects in general. The truth is it’s a completely nonlinear process. I’ve learned that there are going to be times where I’m incredibly inspired and can sew for 12 hours at a time and times when I sit dumbfounded in my studio. I’m coming to terms with both levels. If there is one thing that Vlad (who doesn’t sew/create) has taught me, it’s to back away. If I’m not feeling it, I’ll do more damage than good by trying to force myself to be creative.

I wanted to give people some insight into my thought process. This is honest to god my process for making this dress. I apologize for the terrible quality but all I had to work with was a sharpie, pen and a couple highlighters.

J: “It turned into a dress, just go with it”
